Obsidienne, an encounter between photography and dance

Argentine artist Dani Pannullo and Spanish photographer Alberto García-Alix have teamed up to present Obsidienne, the Black Stone, a creation that fuses the disciplines of dance and photography. The work belongs to a trilogy designed by Pannullo, conceived and developed in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire), the first part of which was presented in 2024 in collaboration with photographer Gorka Postigo.

The company directed by Dani Pannullo is pioneer of contemporary urban dance in Spain. Both Spanish and Ivorian dancers participate in this trilogy. “They were all selected intuitively, considering the unique qualities of each individual and what they brought to each performance,” says its director.

In Obsidienne, Alberto García-Alix contributes his vision of Pannullo’s creation in motion. The photographer traveled to Abidjan for the occasion to photograph the dancers for three weeks. For the Argentinian artist, Alberto García-Alix’s vision makes Obsidienne “an allegory, an extended metaphor, an abstract creation, a black and white dance on the idea of a stone that heals and protects: an amulet and mirror, a knife and a sacred relic, a stone of paradise that cleanses us of all evil upon touching it.”

The work, which was presented at the Abidjan School of Architecture on Monday, April 20th, 2026, received support and collaboration from the Spanish Embassy in Côte d’Ivoire, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and the Ivorian Centre National des Arts de la Culture (CNAC).
